Annual comprehensive eye exams are essential for monitoring current vision and ocular health as well as preventing serious eye diseases. Patients can have their first eye exam as early as 6 months old to check for signs that may cause a “lazy eye” in a near future. It is crucial for our patients over the age of 50 to be examined annually because they have higher chances of developing blinding eye diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts.
A comprehensive eye exam includes but not limited to visual acuity, binocularity, eye muscle, and pupillary reaction testing, refraction for glasses prescription, evaluation of the front and back of the eye, intraocular pressure measurement, and visual field screening. During a comprehensive exam if an ocular disease, such as conjunctivitis, cataracts, or glaucoma, is diagnosed, treatment and management using the medical model will follow.
